Breaking the Silence: Empowering Men’s Mental Health

As Mental Health Month draws to a close, the importance of addressing men’s mental well-being remains urgent. Despite progress, men still hesitate to seek help, leading to unnoticed struggles and alarming statistics2. Men are less likely to seek professional support, often resorting to self-medication or other behaviours.

Ignoring mental health can have devastating consequences—straining relationships, reducing productivity, and increasing suicide rates among men. It’s a silent crisis demanding action.

The CANDO campaign (link to https://www.menshealthforum.org.uk/cando), is empowering men to break free from silence. Through advocacy, education, and support, the Men’s Health Forum encourages men to prioritise their mental well-being by following the five ways to wellbeing which we can all do that are scientifically-proven to help us feel better

1. Connect: Reach out to others by calling an old friend or family member. Building connections fosters support networks and reduces feelings of isolation.

2. (Be) Active: Engage in physical activity like going for a run, walk, swim, or dance. Moving your body not only benefits physical health but also boosts mood and reduces stress.

3. Notice: Take notice of your environment by disconnecting from your phone for an hour and observing your surroundings. Practicing mindfulness promotes relaxation and mental clarity.

4. Discover: Stimulate your mind by learning something new, such as reading a book you haven’t read before. Learning provides mental stimulation and enhances personal growth.

5. Offer (or give): Do something for someone else, like volunteering for a local community group. Giving back fosters a sense of purpose and connection to others.

By embracing these steps, men can rewrite the narrative surrounding mental health and lead healthier lives.

Join the CANDO campaign and be part of the movement toward a brighter, mentally healthier future. Together, we can shatter stigma and ensure every man feels empowered to prioritize his mental well-being.
